Para kay Susan Fernandez…

FYI.

Hello everyone–

You may or may not know of or heard Ms. Susan Fernandez sing but to me she’s
one of the rarest. She is the voice that made popular the womens’ rights song
"BABAE KA!".  She’s not only a friend to me and to many others
but she has always been lending her time in fund-raising shows for fellow
artists in need of financial help for medical treatment.  My documentary
films would not have that much impact if not delivered by her clear, soothing
voice full of conviction.

It took her sometime to tell me that she has been diagnosed with cancer of the
ovary, and thank God it is still in stage 1.

Attending this show will show your respect for one of the jewels of
Philippine Arts and Culture though her  talent has remained unrecognized
by still so many people, especially the present generation.  So we are
reviving her album in CD format and will be part of the fund-raising as well.

See you July 3, 6-9:30 pm, Brother’s Mustache…

Thank you and God Bless!

A Lousy Fete dela Musique this year…

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

It was a lousy Fete last Saturday—a far cry from its early years when the lineup was more diverse and interesting,
the crowd more enthusiastic and animated, and the entire event better planned
and organized. Lousiest stage goes to the World/Electronica Stage (How can you
call a stage World without the world bands playing on it? No Pinikpikan, no Makiling
Ensemble, no Kadangyan; Dead crowd, ridiculous choice of venue, poor lineup). Tied
at the So-so stage are the Pop, Alternative & RNB Stage (Heck, why did they
have to cluster Dice & K9 with some of the cream of the crop?) and the Rock
stage (Terrible lineup except for Greyhoundz; the only stage where the crowd was
responding to the music).

If it were not for
the awesome performance of Brigada, the atmospheric melodies of Playphonics,
the sexy Sino Sikat?, the pop-rock sensibilities of Delara (the band formerly
known as Mojofly), the gut-wrenching music of Greyhoundz, and the exciting and
refreshing act of Taken by Cars, the whole thing would have been utterly
depressing and forgettable. Thank heavens it was free. Too bad I wasn’t able to
catch Up Dharma Down, Juan Pablo Dream and Tropical Depression (they were in
the lineup although I’m not sure if they, indeed, played).

Anyway, take a look at some of the photos of the event in my
albums section.

Filipinos were known to be top caliber animators that even some - Ralph Fernan (Chicken Little) - of them have infiltrated some of the most prestigious animation companies like Disney, Marvel, Warner Brothers
and Hanna Barbera. In fact, some foreign animations were made by
Filipinos, but what hinders Filipinos for making a movie with "Tatak
Pinoy" is due to limited budget. But now, here it is, the first ever
major Filipino Animation. Although Dayo (see trailer in Youtube) was the first ever Filipino Full-Length Animation… .

The
movie will be in Tagalog format and the characters are voiced by
Filipino actors themselves and none would be in the least a foreigner:
along in the top lists are Asia ’s songbird Regine Velasquez who lends
her voice to the title role of "Urduja," with Cesar Montano as the male
lead Limhang. Also, Eddie Garcia as Lakanpati, Jay Manalo as Simakwel,
Michael V. as Kukut,Epi Quizon as Daisuke Allan K Tarsir, Ruby
Rodriguez as Mayumi and Johnny Delgado as Wang impart their vocal
talents to give the movie more "color." The animated feature film is
produced by Tony Tuviera’s APT Entertainment with Vic Sotto. The
trailer of the said flick was first shown in the ongoing Metro Manila
Film Festival (MMFF).

What’s more: According to GoodNewsPilipinas. Com, "Movie
columnists and viewers who saw the teaser said the animation of
"Urduja" is very impressive and can be compared to foreign animated
films of Disney or Dreamworks. It only goes to show that we are no
longer behind when it comes to Hollywood animated features because we
have brilliant Filipino animators who can deliver work that is
comparable, if not better, than Hollywood productions.
"

The
story would focus on one of biggest Filipino legends of the same title.
Urduja (ca. 1350 C.E - 1400 C.E.), is a legendary warrior-princess who
is recognized as a heroine in Pangasinan. A historical reference to
Urduja can be found in the travel account of Ibn Battuta (1304 -
possibly 1368 or 1377 C.E.), a Muslim traveler from Morocco .

Ibn
Battuta described Urduja as the ruler of Kaylukari in the land of
Tawalisi . Ibn Battuta stopped by Tawalisi, which is believed to be
around the Pangasinan coastal town of Sual , on his way to China . Princess Urduja
was described as a daughter of a king named Tawalisi of a land that was
also called Tawalisi. The ruler of Tawalisi, according to Ibn Battuta,
possessed many ships and was a rival of China , which was then ruled by
a Mongol dynasty. Ibn Battuta sailed for 17 days to reach China from
the land of Tawalisi . Urduja will be shown on June 18, 2008 in 120 theaters nationwide.
